Avignon  is a French town bordered by the left bank of the Rhône river. The ancient town centre is surrounded by its medieval ramparts.

The Saint Bénézet bridge (when is a bridge a bridge?), over the Rhône River, only stretches across half the river with four arches (out of the initial 22) remain which start from the Avignon side of the river.

The highlight is the Papal Palaces (Palais des Papes). It is one of the largest and most important medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. The Palais des Papes is located within the historic center of Avignon. It is also a World Heritage site.
